Contraception Information

Contraception Services

Contraception services are provided by the GPs and the Practice Sister.

If you are undecided on which method to choose, you can make an appointment with Sister Everett who will be able to discuss the different options available.

The Pill

For those already taking the oral combined pill, you need to have your blood pressure monitored annually. If there are no problems and you are quite happy with your current pill you can have your Blood Pressure taken by Yvonne, our health care assistant. If you wish to discuss contraception in greater length and possibly make changes, then you should make an appointment to see Sister Everett or a GP.

The Injection

For those using the injection for contraception. You have to collect the injection from the pharmacy and bring it with you to your appointment so that Sister Everett can administer it to you. (Unfortunately we are no longer allowed to order it in the practice.) Please make sure you have time to have the prescription issued, and then collect the injection before your appointment.

The Implant

If you would like to have the contraceptive implant fitted or removed, Sister Everett is trained in these procedures. You have to collect the implant from the pharmacy and bring it with you to your appointment so that Sister Everett can insert it for you. (Unfortunately we are no longer allowed to order it in the practice.) Please make sure you have time to have the prescription issued, and then collect the injection before your appointment.

The Coil

If you would like to have the coil fitted or removed, Dr Maguire is trained in these procedures.

For an insertion, you have to make an appointment to discuss having the coil fitted with Dr Maguire first, and then she will arrange for an appointment to be made for the insertion, where Sister Everett will assist. You will be given a prescription for the coil which you will have to collect from the pharmacy and bring it with you to your appointment. (Unfortunately we are no longer allowed to order it in the practice.)

Please make sure you have time to have the prescription issued and then collect the coil before your appointment.

For removals, you need to make an appointment for both Dr Maguire and Sister Everett at the same time.

Sterilisation

If you have decided you definitely would like to undergo a Sterilisation procedure, you need to make an appointment for a GP to discuss, and then be referred to the hospital.
